The Benefits of Supporting Local Businesses

by Main Street Pittsboro

One of the most remembered scenes in “It’s a Wonderful Life” is the run on the bank. “The money’s not here. Your money’s in Joe’s house… right next to yours. And in the Kennedy house, and Mrs. Macklin’s house, and a hundred others.” That scene reminds us of how intertwined a community is. It reminds us that we must all work together. In the movie, it was the Building and Loan that was at risk. In a community, it is all the local businesses. At the tail end of the scene is another reminder of what makes a community tick. “We’ve got to stick together, though. We’ve got to have faith in each other.” Again, it is by supporting local businesses that our community prospers.

That is hands-down the most significant reason and benefit of supporting local businesses. However, it is far from the only one. A robust local economy is essential, but you can benefit on a personal level, as well. For example, when you enjoy local restaurants or even food trucks, you have the opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors. You won’t have that chance if you drive an hour or more to a big city. There is also a greater chance you’ll dine on fresh produce and ingredients grown and raised in the area.

The personalized attention you will receive at local businesses is yet another reason for shopping locally. Check out the grocery stores, toy stores, furniture stores, home décor stores, clothing stores, hair salons, barbershops, and other locally operated establishments, and you’ll be sure to feel a great deal more welcomed than at any national chain.

We’re with you! We first met Angelina at a public charrette session. She brought a pan of her fantastic baklava to share and endeared herself to us for life. She, John, and their team represent the very best of Pittsboro.
