PITTSBORO – Main Street Pittsboro was awarded a grant from the Chatham Arts Council’s Grassroots Arts Grant program. The grant will help fund a portion of the mural at the Chatham County/Pittsboro Welcome Center at 37 Hillsboro Street, Pittsboro, NC.

In the spring of 2020, Main Street Pittsboro announced a Call for Artists to transform a blank wall on the north side of the Welcome Center by adding a painted mural. From a pool of contenders, acclaimed regional muralist Michael Brown was commissioned to illustrate and paint the mural portraying the flora, fauna, and agricultural heritage of Chatham County.

“We were lucky to get Michael Brown out of semi-retirement to design and paint this mural,” said Commissioner Michael Fiocco, chair of the Main Street Pittsboro Design Committee. “We’re grateful to the Chatham Arts Council for helping us make downtown even more colorful and interesting.”

Examples of Chatham’s natural life such as bald eagles, turtles, egrets, lakes, and rivers make up the content of the mural. A nod to Chatham’s agricultural heritage is included with the addition of chickens, cows, pigs, horses, and rabbits. The mural puts another creative destination on the downtown map, attracting visitors and residents, and serving as a popular backdrop for photos.

The mural brightens an alley which will be the site of a shaded outdoor patio where pedestrians can pause and enjoy downtown.

This project was supported by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts
