Around Pittsboro: Get Pampered at The Salon

by Jamie Nunnelly

Basic self-care can be as simple as getting your hair cut and being pampered for a couple of hours. Pittsboro is lucky to have several salons and barbershops catering to local clientele. One hair salon located right near the center of the downtown area is called appropriately The Salon.

A.J. Solomon and Leigh Belperain started The Salon in October 2011 after they met and worked together at Salon Blue, which is also in Pittsboro. Their new professional home. The Salon is located at 49 Hillsboro Street, next door to the Blue Dot Coffee Shop. Lori Cook joined the team in November 2018.

“We love Pittsboro. I always loved the idea of being on the main street. It’s so quaint!” said A.J.

A.J. started cutting hair in 2002.  “I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was in college. Then I remembered how I liked it when my friends and I would do each other’s hair, and play with our doll’s hair. Lots of times when my mom came home after a hard day’s work, she would love for me to brush and braid her hair. I started thinking that doing people’s hair was something I enjoyed and I liked making them feel good,” said A.J. “I went to beauty school in Burlington and started in the business in Chapel Hill. I wanted to start out in a place where I didn’t know anyone because I was very shy,” said A.J.  She also liked the creative aspect of styling hair. The idea that she could work anywhere in the world was appealing to her as well.

Co-founder Leigh Belperain went to East Carolina University and explored about five different majors as she tried to figure out what she wanted to do with her life. “My mom told me I should try doing hair, so I decided to give it a try. I went to hair school and I never turned back!”

Leigh grew up in Pittsboro, worked for a short time in Durham, then worked at Salon Blue where she met A.J.

The Salon offers a variety of hair products including those from Redken and even a vegan line.

Lori started her career by doing nails. “I wanted to get into the beauty business in high school but my parents wouldn’t let me. I went to college and started doing nails.  I wanted to do more, so I went back and got my full cosmetology license. I have been doing it for 17 years.” Lori spent her entire career in Siler City until November, when she joined The Salon.

When Lori isn’t making other people look good, she enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and their four children. “I love all of the action in downtown Pittsboro. There’s always something going on. It’s just a lively little place!” Lori and her boyfriend can often be seen at The Mod, one of their favorite places to eat.

People come to The Salon to get haircuts, color, straightening treatments, and just about anything except roller sets. Their clients include women, men, and children.

“We enjoy being in downtown Pittsboro. You can walk up and down the streets and go into different shops. It’s really pleasant here,” commented Leigh.

The Salon is located at 49 Hillsboro St, Pittsboro, NC 27312. Please call for appointments: (919) 545-0210
